Backstory: How the Couple Came to DWD for their Destination Wedding

Some couples come to me to plan a vacation.
Some come back again and again for their trips.
And every once in a while… a couple reaches out and says, “Will you help us plan our destination wedding?”

That was the case with Tautiona and Nick.

I had already worked with them in the past helping plan vacations, so when Tautiona reached out after getting engaged and asked me to help with their destination wedding, it was such an honor.

From the beginning, she had a clear vision in her mind of what she wanted their wedding day to feel like. My role was to help take that vision and turn it into something real! From selecting the right resort to managing guest travel and coordinating all the moving pieces that come with a destination wedding, we made it all come together in a beautiful celebration surrounded by their favorite people, filled with meaningful details, incredible music, and one unforgettable dance party.

Choosing the Right Resort for Their Destination Wedding

One of the first steps in planning Tautiona and Nick’s destination wedding was choosing the right resort.

Tautiona shared their must-haves, the style they loved, the vibe they wanted, and the experience they hoped their guests would have. From there, I presented several beautiful properties that aligned with their vision, budget, and guest experience goals.

Once their resort was selected, the planning really began!

Destination weddings are unique because you’re not only planning a wedding, you’re coordinating an entire travel experience for your guests. From accommodations to airport transfers to travel questions, every detail matters.

We landed on Dreams Vista Cancun in Mexico, and it was such a great fit for what they were looking for with their wedding and for their guests!

Creating a Wedding Design That Reflected Their Style

Once the resort was secured, we began building the overall design and atmosphere for their celebration. This is where the destination wedding story really starts to unfold and feel real! Their wedding concept was what I called “lively romance.” It was meant to blend heartfelt moments with fun, celebration, and incredible music. Their color palette featured dusty blues, navy, soft greens, and ivory, creating an elegant but relaxed destination wedding look. I talked more about their destination wedding design on Instagram. Ultimately, we used less flowers and more candles & lighting to amp up the romantic, yet lively feel. And save on costs!

The ceremony venue was the Preferred Deck, an open-air deck overlooking the water. We planned for a stunning golden ring floral arch to frame the couple as they exchange vows, with white chairs and aisle florals creating a clean and timeless backdrop. The overall feel was romantic, polished, and perfectly suited for a destination celebration.

When Mother Nature Tried to Join the Party

Of course, no destination wedding is completely without surprises! The wind made a strong appearance during their ceremony, forcing a quick adjustment to the décor setup.

Tautiona later joked:

“The wind tried to take our wedding out.” 😂

Even though the wind prevented the gold ring arch from being used exactly as planned during the ceremony, the décor was still used beautifully at the reception and everything came together seamlessly.

And in the end, it didn’t change what mattered most. The day was still everything they had envisioned.

A Rooftop Reception and an Epic Dance Party

After the ceremony, guests had some time to freshen up while Tautiona and Nick stepped away for photos. The night then transitioned to cocktail hour overlooking the ocean, complete with a Mariachi band. Everyone grabbed a drink, relaxed, enjoyed the view, and celebrated the newly married couple.

As the sun set, the celebration moved to a rooftop reception space glowing under strands of romantic lighting. Round tables with white linens, dusty blue table runners, candles, and repurposed ceremony florals created an elegant atmosphere for dinner and dancing.

And the music? It was incredibly personal.

Nick had a professional DJ friend who helped curate the soundtrack for the evening, blending romantic classics with old-school hip-hop to create an unforgettable dance party.

According to Tautiona, this became the highlight of the night.

“The reception! Everyone was up dancing and just enjoying themselves.”

And they ended the night with an outfit change and sparkling send off! It was the kind of celebration every couple hopes for. Joyful, energetic, and full of love!
