It is no secret that Broadway shows are one of my favorite must dos in New York City. After a long day of trekking around the streets, I like to get a little gussied up to sit back, relax, and enjoy the many incredible productions the Theatre District has to offer.
But before I can relax, I have to figure out the perfect outfit for the show. You’ll see people dressed in all sorts of ways for the theatre, but I prefer to keep it classy. I don’t go all out, but dressing up a bit feels great after a long day of touring. So what do I wear? I’ve put together a quick post on what I wear to a Broadway show for each season.
Spring
For the Springtime, a nice dress with closed-toed shoes are a great option. You may need your coat as well as it could get chilly on your walk to the theatre, or perhaps a light sweater and scarf would do.
Summer
I love dresses because they pack so easily, so this is another great option for summer. For summer, sandals are a good option since it is much warmer. I typically get hot inside the theatre, but you may want to carry a pashmina in case you get a little cool while in your seat.
Fall
I love dressing outfits up in the Fall! A simple dress can be completely transformed with riding boots and a fur scarf. If it is an especially cool night, add leggings for added warmth.
Winter
Dressing for the theatre in the Winter is a little more tricky. It is so cold outside, yet the theatre gets warm. For the Winter, I’m all about layers. Slacks or black leggings with a nice blouse (long blouse when wearing leggings of course) or a dress with leggings are always a classy choice. I add a fun bootie and fur vest along with my typical winter garb—hat, gloves and coat. Before you get to your seat, remove your coat as most of the theatres in New York are old and thus have small seating.
What about the guys? Well, I couldn’t get my husband to agree to be my model, but it’s fairly simple with gents. A nice button down shirt with slacks or nice jeans are always great.
I know these outfits are simple, but you don’t know what you don’t know! And don’t hesitate to kick it up a notch! For instance, during my last visit I loved wearing an all black ensemble to see Chicago complete with leather leggings—perfect for the show if I do say so myself.
Hopefully this will help guide you on what to pack if you’ll be seeing a Broadway show in New York.
