Vacation Packing Tips

Vacation Packing Tips

These vacation packing tips will help with the one thing you can’t outsource. While you can outsource all the planning and booking of your vacation to your favorite Travel Pro, there’s one part you will tackle on your own… packing.

Packing for a trip can be stressful. You want to make sure that you have everything you need, but you also don’t want to overpack and have to deal with a suitcase that is too heavy to lift when you get to your destination.

Here are my top tips for efficient packing:

Tip #1: Limit the shoes

They take up a lot of real estate in your bag and add weight. Try to keep it to no more than 3 pairs. Grab either boots for cool weather or a comfy sandal for hot destinations. Then either a cute heel or flat that works with any outfit for dinner. The last pair is your MUST-HAVE, a great pair of walking shoes.

Never bring a new pair of shoes on your trip. You want to enjoy sightseeing without dealing with blisters or sore feet.

Tip #2: Packing cubes for vacation

They are worth the hype. These little gems can help you save space and stay organized. If you’re going to have a lot of bulkier items, go for the compression cubes to create even more space. Check out my blog post on packing cubes here.

Tip #3: Skip single use clothing for vacation packing

The easiest way to cut down on the bulk in your bag is to ditch clothes that can only be worn once. Dresses or one-pieces, choose items you are happy to wear again on the same trip. For separates, the trick is to pick a color palette and stick with it. Then mix and match your way into multiple outfits with the same few pieces. You can add accessories to create more differences.

While we are talking clothes, limit it to items that travel well. I don’t care how much you love that one dress or top, if it wrinkles beyond redemption in a bag, leave it at home.

Tip #4: Plan ahead

The simplest way to make packing less stressful is to make a plan. Write a list. Start setting out your outfits and travel toiletries. Travel often? Do what I do, and keep a toiletry bag ready. Then just check it and replace what’s needed before you go. Check out my packing essentials on Amazon here.

Tip #5: Packing an empty vacation bag can save the day

Fold down an empty duffle or tote into the bottom of your bag. Then you’ll have extra space for the trip home. Either fill it with all the new stuff you picked up in your destination, simply enjoy not having to pack so tight for your return, or use if for dirty clothes. That’s what I do! Here is my packable duffle of choice.

Tip #6: Wear it on your flight

Taking a winter coat? Need to take heavy boots? Whatever it is, put it on your body instead of in your bag. If it’s heavy or awkward-sized, this is the way to go.
