When you pair one of the most charming towns in Mexico with a group of travel advisors who know how to have fun—you get magic. My recent trip to San Miguel de Allende started with a FAM (familiarization trip—a trip for travel agents to learn about a destination and hotels) hosted by Mexico FAMTrips, but a few of us decided to fly in early to explore more of this colorful, creative city. Spoiler alert: we soaked up every moment (and yes, I came home with more hats than I can count). Your own San Miguel girls trip awaits!
About San Miguel de Allende
Nestled in central Mexico’s central, San Miguel de Allende is a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its colorful colonial architecture, cobblestone streets, and vibrant arts scene. This charming city blends rich history with modern flair, offering everything from bustling artisan markets and rooftop restaurants to elegant boutique hotels and cultural experiences like mojiganga making and traditional cooking classes—all of which I got to experience! With its warm hospitality and effortlessly stylish vibe, San Miguel is the perfect destination for a girls trip, romantic getaway, or a destination wedding celebration.
Where We Stayed: 3 Unique Takes on Luxury
One of the best parts of this trip? Getting to experience three of San Miguel’s beautiful hotels—each with its own distinct personality.
- Hotel Matilda felt effortlessly cool, artsy, and boutique. Think: sleek interiors, modern art, and a dreamy pool that begged for a slow afternoon.
- Rosewood San Miguel de Allende delivered those classic, romantic hacienda vibes with sweeping views, warm service, and sunsets that made you pause.
- Live Aqua San Miguel de Allende was the perfect blend of contemporary design and Mexican elegance, with the kind of spa and culinary experiences that turn a hotel stay into a full-body reset.
Each property offered a unique lens into what a luxe San Miguel experience could look like—and as a travel planner, it was incredible to compare them all side-by-side. Exploring San Miguel: Food, Fun & So. Many. Hats.
San Miguel is the kind of place where you never feel rushed. We spent our days wandering cobblestone streets, popping into artisan shops, and saying yes to all the rooftop cocktails. I fell in love with the Conejo Carajillo on the rooftop at Carajillo Restaurante. P.S. If you’ve never had a carajillo before, you are missing out! This one in particulate featured a chocolate bunny, which is what conejo in Spanish means—bunny. We joined a delicious food tour that let us sample everything from local street snacks to gourmet bites. I’ll never stop dreaming about the jicama shrimp tacos and churros we tried! Later, we got hands-on in a cooking class at the Rosewood that ended with full bellies and even fuller hearts.
Of course, no San Miguel de Allende girls trip is complete without a little shopping—ok, a lot of shopping. I became completely obsessed with the local hat scene (you’ve seen my Instagram, you get it). I also snagged a few textiles and treasures that will forever remind me of this joyful adventure.
Palomas, Mojigangas & Magic | The Perfect Combo for a Girls Trip to San Miguel de Allende
One of the most unexpected highlights? Our paloma-making class (because what better way to bond than over tequila and fresh citrus?). Did you know palomas are the official drink of Mexico? That’s right, it’s not a margarita! We also got to create our very own mojiganga—the iconic oversized puppets that are a staple in San Miguel celebrations. It was messy, creative, and so much fun.
But more than anything, what made this trip special was the people I got to share it with. Travel advisors spend so much time crafting incredible journeys for others, getting to unplug and travel together felt like the best kind of therapy.
