Ashley & Ryan’s destination wedding at The Fives Beach Hotel & Residences in Riviera Maya, Mexico was planned with the intention of creating an intimate, yet intentional celebration. From the very beginning, they were clear that they didn’t want a production. They wanted a celebration centered on connection, presence, and meaning rather than expectations or outside pressure. Their small Mexico destination wedding celebration was thoughtfully designed to feel relaxed, elegant, and aligned with who they are as a couple. Set against the soft ocean breeze and setting sun, their day was proof that small does not mean simple. It means intentional.
An Intimate Mexico Destination Wedding at The Fives Beach Hotel
The couple came to me with the hopes of finding a planner that would respect their vision and wishes. Ashley & Ryan live in the Washington, DC area with stressful jobs, so they wanted destination wedding planning feel like a vacation. DWD was exactly the right fit!
Why They Chose a Small Destination Wedding in Mexico
They did not want a huge celebration with stressful planning, nor a large guest list. Ashley was quoted in The New York Times where she said,
“We have seen friends get married over the years who are so stressed out by the planning… I didn’t want to go through that.”
I was so shocked and excited about the article, and shared more about it here.
Ashley didn’t want to be swept up in wedding industry pressure. Her and Ryan agreed that they wanted something with no fanfare, but meaningful.
This wedding was strategic and confident, not “scaled down.” Ashley also expressed to me that she wasn’t keen on the idea of being the center of attention, so an intimate celebration perfectly aligned. She didn’t want dances with all eyes on her. She wanted to keep that to a minimum for the ceremony, focusing more on celebrating with their guests, rather than performing for them.
Their Destination Wedding Venue: The Fives Beach Hotel & Residences
The destination wedding couple opted to celebrate in Riviera Maya at The Fives Beach Hotel & Residences. The Fives was such a great fit for not only their vision, but their guests as well. The resort offers 1, 2, and 3 bedroom suites, which allowed for their siblings and their children to have comfortable accommodations.
Of course the guests were important, but the selling point was the private wedding venues. The Beachfront Gazebo ended up being the perfect spot to host not only their intimate ceremony, but their reception as well. Ashley & Ryan opted for a little longer cocktail hour in between in order for the space to be swapped from event to event. Everything turned out seamlessly for their intimate Riviera Maya destination wedding!
How a Clear Vision Made This Destination Wedding Seamless
One of the reasons Ashley & Ryan’s destination wedding felt so effortless was because they were crystal clear on what mattered most to them. When a couple has that kind of clarity, everything flows differently. Decisions become easier. Distractions fall away. And the energy on the wedding day shifts from stress to presence. You can see it in their photos—the way they look at each other, the relaxed smiles, the unhurried moments. There’s a calm confidence woven through every image. That’s what happens when a wedding is built on intention rather than expectation. Their love wasn’t overshadowed by logistics or outside opinions; it was the center of everything. And that’s what made the entire day feel seamless.
Planning Your Own Intimate Destination Wedding in Mexico
If you’re dreaming of an intimate destination wedding in Mexico, know this: smaller does not mean less meaningful. In fact, it often means more intention, more connection, and more space to truly enjoy the experience. Whether you’re envisioning a quiet beachfront ceremony in the Riviera Maya or a refined gathering at an all-inclusive resort like The Fives, the key is clarity around what matters most to you. As you plan, focus on your priorities, not outside expectations. With the right guidance and thoughtful planning, an intimate Mexico destination wedding can feel elevated, seamless, and completely aligned with who you are as a couple.
