Honeymoon How To | A Planning Timeline & Guide

Your wedding is for everyone you love—but your honeymoon is for the two of you. With a full calendar of dress fittings, cake tastings, and guest updates, it’s easy for your honeymoon planning timeline to fall behind. That’s where DWD Travel steps in, and we make sure your honeymoon feels intentional, effortless, and every bit as special as your wedding day.

Hey, hey, I’m Dana, owner of DWD Travel & Destination Weddings, and, along with planning destination weddings, it is my passion to curate custom honeymoon and trip itineraries for couples looking to explore the world. I aim to help couples, like you, make every dollar and moment count. From ensuring your itinerary is meaningful to adding in romantic details, I plan with heart and intention so you can focus on what really matters: each other and relaxing after all of the wedding planning!

Whether you’re dreaming of an overwater bungalow in the Bora Bora or wine tasting in Italy, planning ahead is the key to a honeymoon that feels effortless. Depending on how much time you have between your engagement, wedding, and the moment you jet off, your timeline may shift (don’t worry, we can help with that!), but starting early always gives you the best options!

Here’s your step-by-step honeymoon planning timeline & guide to what to do and when, so your first trip as newlyweds is unforgettable for all the right reasons.

Your Honeymoon Planning Timeline: What to Do First

This is the fun part! Around 9–12 months out, you get to dream and decide where your first adventure as a married couple will take you. The first step in honeymoon planning is choosing the when, where, and how much. Here’s what to tackle first:

  • Choose your destination: Research the best time of year to visit, average travel time, and the type of experience you both want. Are you look for adventure, relaxation, culture, or a mix?
  • Consider your wedding date and seasonality: Will your dream spot be in rainy season or peak tourist season? If the timing doesn’t align, a delayed honeymoon might be worth it to hit the perfect window.
  • Set a realistic budget: Factor in everything — flights, accommodations, activities, meals, and those little splurges that make a honeymoon memorable.
  • Check your documents: Make sure your passport is up to date (and valid for at least six months past your travel dates). Avoid last-minute panic!

DWD Tip: Skip all of that research and contact me! My expertise is helping you choose the perfect destination, navigate peak seasons, and curate bucket-list itineraries like the Maldives or an African safari.

4-6 Months Before Your Honeymoon: Design the Experience

This is when your honeymoon starts to take shape. You’ve nailed down the where and when. Now let’s make it unforgettable.

  • Secure the primary details: Your honeymoon home base matters. Oceanfront bungalow? Private villa? Boutique city hotel? The best rooms often book months in advance. Lock in your flights, accommodations, and primary transportation early so you get your first choice instead of what’s left over.
  • Reserve signature dining and experiences: Whether it’s a private beachfront dinner, wine pairing menu, or sunset cruise, in-demand (or private) experiences can sell out fast. Book early for the best availability.
  • Fill in the gaps: Once the primary pieces are handled, fill in the itinerary gaps with independent sightseeing and must-see spots, but don’t forget to build in downtime. The best memories often come from unstructured time!

DWD Tip: This is where I can make magic happen… Creating an itinerary beyond what you could have imagined, and steering you toward activities that are actually worth the splurge.

1 to 2 Months Before Your Honeymoon: Final Touches

The big stuff is done (and the big day is approaching). This phase is all about preparation and peace of mind.

  • Confirm all bookings: Double-check flights, accommodations, transfers, and activities.
  • Handle final logistics: Order foreign currency if needed, check visa requirements, and review (or obtain) travel insurance.
  • Prep your wardrobe & gear: Make sure you have everything from swimsuits to comfy walking shoes, and any special outfits for romantic dinners or excursions.

DWD Tip: If you work with an advisor like DWD Travel, the organization and confirmation of your itinerary is handled for you! While I make sure everything is in place, all you have to do is pack.

The Week Of: Time to Take Off on Your Honeymoon

The countdown is on! Just a few more details to handle before you slip into honeymoon mode.

  • Print confirmations or store digital copies: Keep everything in one easy-to-access folder.
  • Set up phone plans & notify banks: Avoid surprise charges or frozen cards.
  • Tie up loose ends: Set your out-of-office email, tidy up any final wedding tasks, and make sure someone at home knows your travel details.
  • Pack smart: Medications, passports, travel adapters, and any can’t-live-without items for your destination.

DWD Tip: My goal is to make sure you leave with everything handled, so your only job is to enjoy your first trip as newlyweds.
