Planning a Honeymoon in Italy: Memories, Food, and History

Sabrina & Tommy came to me needing help to planning a honeymoon in Italy, knowing exactly what they wanted. However, with everything else going on in their lives, they felt overwhelmed and decided to seek my help. Right away on our consultation call, I knew I could bring their honeymoon dreams to life. They wanted to spend summer nights strolling the streets of Florence, exploring the history in Rome, sipping limoncello in Sorrento, and leaving their meal plan at home in favor of all the fresh pasta they could eat! Read on to hear all about their dreamy Italian honeymoon.

About the Couple’s Honeymoon Experience in Italy

After the trip, Sabrina wrote about our planning their Italy Honeymoon with DWD,She [Dana] took the thinking and the stress out of planning our first trip out of the country. We will definitely book our next trip through DWD, not only is she a travel guru but she’s an absolute gem!”

For me, I was excited to have them do a photoshoot in Florence and an authentic cooking class in the Tuscan countryside. Those two experiences couldn’t have been more perfect for Sabrina & Tommy. In fact, they said the cooking adventure was the highlight of their trip!

“We were driven into the Florence countryside by Fabio and welcomed into his home by him and his wife. There, we shared wine from their friend’s vineyard, ate local cheeses, and dipped bread in olive oil that they had pressed from their own olive trees. …plan on replicating the recipes this Fall when our families come to visit us for the holidays.”

That my friends is what travel is all about–getting know, learning from, and experiencing other cultures. Now those people, places, and foods are forever part of Sabrina & Tommy!

Q&A with the Couple

Believe it or not, they had more to share! Below are a few highlights and tips from their experience across Italy and planning with DWD.

What was the highlight of your experience?

The highlight of our trip was the cooking experience we had in Florence. We were driven into the Florence countryside by Fabio and welcomed into his home by him and his wife. There, we shared wine from their friend’s vineyard, ate local cheeses, and dipped bread in olive oil that they had pressed from their own olive trees. We cooked together, learning how to make pasta from scratch and a traditional meat stew. While our apple tart cooled in their kitchen window, it began raining and rain was coming in through the window. It was an absolutely surreal experience. We ate dessert in their backyard and talked all night. It was absolutely one of our favorite experiences- we talk about it all the time and plan on replicating the recipes this Fall when our families come to visit us for the holidays.

What was the biggest surprise about your trip?

The biggest surprises of our trip were probably the food and the history. Everyone always says how amazing the food is in Italy and we think we had kind of shrugged it off as something people said to brag about their vacation, but it truly was exceptional. We did not eat one meal that we did not enjoy. We were also taken aback at how much we learned from the various tours we took in each city.

What was your favorite spot to visit and why?

Our favorite spot to visit was definitely Florence. We enjoyed a private walking tour and learned about the rich history of Florence. It was so great to do that when we first arrived because it made exploring on our own that much more enjoyable. It felt less crowded to us than Rome did which was much more our speed. We had a lot of free time during this leg of the trip and were able to seek out spots we had seen online, like the Duomo, the wine windows or walking to the top of Pizzale Michelangelo to watch the sunset. Also, steak florentine! This was also the stop that DWD was able to surprise us with a professional photoshoot! We got up at sunrise to meet our photographer and it was so much fun. Now we have pictures that we will treasure for the rest of our lives.

What was your favorite meal of the trip?

This is going to sound silly because one of our favorite meals was not the most fancy nor was it planned. But we think that’s what made it the best. One of our favorite meals was a sandwich we had in Sorrento. One day while we were walking somewhat aimlessly, we turned down a random alley and stumbled upon a sandwich shop called A’Marenna. The entire alley smelled so good- we had to stop. My sandwich had sundried tomatoes and artichokes and smoked cheese and so many other flavors that I can’t even remember right now- long story short, we sat in an alley drinking peronis and having the best panino of our lives after being down by the ocean all day and it was the best! We still joke about it, “Do you think A’Marenna misses us like we miss them?”

Honeymoon Planning with DWD Travel

How would you describe your overall experience with working with DWD?

We cannot recommend Dana and DWD enough! We recommend her to everyone who asks about our honeymoon. She is so knowledgeable about travel and makes sure it is a custom experience that fits your interests. It is not a cookie cutter trip. Beyond the actual planning that she did, she was always so responsive and helpful leading up to the trip. She stayed within our budget and was always transparent about pricing. The planning process was so seamless. We had some hiccups during our trip (beyond our control and hers- shoutout to the airlines) and she was available to us via text/phone the whole time working to help us get everything resolved.

When our bags were lost, she made phone calls on our behalf one day so we did not have to miss our boat tour to sit on hold with the airline. We were so grateful. She goes the extra mile to make sure that your trip runs smoothly that is for sure. She even booked us a surprise photoshoot in Florence to make it that much more special. It was so nice to focus on having fun together and knowing that all of our rides and tours were reserved and paid for ahead of time, everything was just perfect. She took the thinking and the stress out of planning our first trip out of the country. We will definitely book our next trip through DWD, not only is she a travel guru but she’s an absolute gem!

Thank you two for allowing me to be apart of such a special trip. It was my joy to help you in planning your dream honeymoon to Italy, and bring your vision to life!
