Our Alaskan cruise itinerary made its first stop on a cloudy, yet dry day in Ketchikan, Alaska. We kept our to do list short, and just experienced the town at a leisurely pace. We started out walking around just the 4 of us, then met up with our group later. Our walk took us to some beautiful sites and rich history.
We started out checking out the sights just off the ship’s dock. It is chockful of woodwork, monuments, shops and restaurants. From there, we ventured into town, making our way past the iconic Ketchikan street sign, that we even could view sailing into port.
We ventured up to see churches, totem poles, quaint shops, and eventually to the famed salmon ladder, where salmon head upstream to spawn each summer. What a sight that would have been to see, but we’d missed it by a couple of weeks. Either way, the river is beautiful and, in the summer, surrounded by lush greenery, not necessarily the Alaska I had envisioned. But beautiful, nonetheless. From the salmon ladder, we headed up into some beautiful trails, and found our way to a park to play before heading back to our ship to watch the seaplanes take off (probably my favorite thing about Ketchikan).
Our time was so leisurely, we made no plans, other than along the way. Though we kept it a slow pace, and free, there are so many great excursions to experience in Ketchikan. A few that stuck out to me were fishing, hiking, eagle watching, and a lumberjack show. Many of these are shorter tours, giving you time to still explore this quaint port.
